Today, through no fault of mine; (I was coordinating a catering event for a family) and I happened to eavesdrop, or more aptly - overheard the parents of the home in the middle of a heated discussion (they were quite loud and I was in the kitchen).
And guess the subject of contention?
Ostensibly, on the man’s parental right to barge in, into his matured daughters room without first, knocking!
The wife vehemently protested the daughter might not be appropriately dressed and she’d always told him to knock before entering the daughters room - an act he always never consented to. The father protested, arguing on why that shouldn’t be a problem as he is the father and what would his daughter be concealing from him? Insinuating he’d seen her nude as a baby. The mother protested, there was a difference.
He then asked why she had to go in first and he was to be restricted. Her answer; she was a female. And she also knocked before going into their son’s room, in respect of his privacy. The husband termed the notion plain ridiculous.
Unfortunately, I had to go outside to check on the fish getting grilled, so I didn’t catch the end of the discussion.
Notwithstanding, the question that boggled my mind is this: Did the mother go overboard, trying to ensuring the personal privacy of her daughter?
And should a father knock or just barge-in, into his daughters room?

My husband will not only respect my kid's privacy but mine as well. What this means is if I am praying in the room and he walks in, the respect he has for me, makes him turn around and give me the privacy. Same goes for my kids, it is more than seeing them nude or something that related, it is also letting the kids realize there is respect in giving people privacy irrespective of who and the relationship in between.
ReplyDeleteThere is respect in giving people privacy irrespective of relationship. - thanks for your comment Labake
DeleteFather's respect your matured female privacy. Thanks
ReplyDeleteThank you too

ReplyDeleteParents or not, children or not, itd is just plain rude to barge in on someone without first notice its a sign of disrespect. Besides being naked, the person might be in a very private state physically or mentally. The father shouldn't barge into a daughter's room or his son's either.
ReplyDeleteAnd you hit the nail on the head
DeleteAnd you hit the nail on the head
DeleteThe mother didn't go overboard and the father was absolutely wrong.
ReplyDeleteEverybody deserves privacy most especially when they begin to mature.

DeleteUnkuuu! She's a grown woman now! There's a difference. Big one! Respect her privacy. The mother is very right
ReplyDeleteRespect women's privacy !!!!
DeleteI can say privacy is a copyright that which anyone has no right to infringe into. Everyone has a high level of privacy in the home once you have your own personal room. It is absolutely wrong for the father to go into any of his children's or wife's room without knocking even though it an emergency situation, and same applies to every occupants in a home.
ReplyDeleteI think there should be an exception to an emergency situation.
DeleteSafety and all
That is if the situation is extremely out of control.
DeleteAlright .I get that you are just been cautious
DeleteWhile we talk and use the words privacy, daughters, private space/room and matured women, there's something amiss in our deliberation and it's the fact that our parents especially father's are unaware of certain privileges meant to be preserved, nurtured and respected. The Father may be the man of the house but once spaces are allotted to different people for different uses, an understanding needs to come with it, especially when it comes to private space (mostly matured children - daughters and sons. If a Father/mother can't respect the privacy of others in the house, there will always be a war front. Even though I am a man, my father walks into my room un-anounced. That's how it starts and that's how it should be corrected otherwise it will get out of hand. Some Fathers Don't see any reason why they should knock, we see reason that's why we tell them; there is surely going to be a war over this but you must keep fighting the battle for your privacy to be respected.
ReplyDeleteMaybe a placard in front of the door - KNOCK BEFORE ENTRY, should be used
DeleteI also hope that as we also grow up, we can also learn and reflect on some of these issues that besiege us. Wife, sons and daughters should be respected at all ages; their privacy, their reasons and decisions alike should not be taken for granted. Its not only privacy that is important but also their mood, emotions can also be violated. We are growing at a fast pace and we need to balance our life with the changing climes around us. Everything can not be the same forever.
ReplyDeleteBalancing our lives with the changing climes around us. Thanks Ademola
DeleteA door is there for a reason. My opinion- always knock, you don't lose anything doing that.
ReplyDelete😍😍😍😍. And I'm in total agreement with you
