For two days now, we have been talking about Controlling Parents and the Characteristics of Controlling Parents. Today we would be looking at the effects on children.
- The children especially teenagers and youths become rebellious and aggressive. Some might even want to go head to head, or talk back in a very rude manner when confronted by their parents.
- They become distant and cold, rarely asking them for advice even when in trouble. Rather they seek out their peers who often give them wrong advice.
- They become more asocial and develop addictions. As they are not allowed to express themselves. And addictions are never good.
- Since they have been bullied into obedience, it will become very easy for them to follow rules. But on the other hand, lack spontaneity, creativity, and leadership skills. They will always need someone to guide them before they make any decision or perform any action. In other-words, they can be termed, humanoids in the human flesh.
- In general, anyone who can’t express themselves and have their choices trampled upon will eventually suffer from depression. The child, not knowing what might trigger the parent, lives in constant anxiety. And anxiety is just a step away from depression. And depression; unchecked, results to very bad consequences.
- Just like Nina, her social skills will take a nosedive. There is no way she will never able to socialize due to fear of repercussion. And if not quickly addressed, she will become permanently tainted.
- Since their parents are always making the decisions, the children end up becoming poor decision makers and dependent on the parents for every scoop of directive. They practically had to wait for their parents even before they can buy anything or choices in academia/career related fields.
- They find it difficult to be emphatic. People will always ride on them because they have been shaped and fine-tuned into a passive personality.
Tomorrow, we would be concluding this series. We would be talking about how to deal with controlling parents.
