In my never-ending quest for a blog fodder, I have been reading voraciously. In addition, what piqued my interest was the question of friendship,
Friendship in several words to me is affectionate, amiable, easygoing, cheerful, available, faithful, considerate, listener, humorous, forgiving. It can also be said that to be a state of mutual trust and support between two parties but if you have, decided to keep someone as a friend, then you must be ready to take in both good and the bad.
I also see friendship as another type of marriage without the formal contract; or the sex - well depends on the individuals involved. I think it takes conscious effort to stay friends with someone despite all the baggage they toss your way. Friendship goes beyond just sharing time together, and its long lasting if both parties are ready to work at it.
Reminiscing, I remembered travelling miles for a very close friends wedding. We’d been friends for close to ten years now - same college. I’d traveled two days prior to the exact wedding date - Nigerian wedding requires a lot of preparations.
The introduction and traditional wedding went on without a hitch. Perfect ceremony. However; in the wee hours of the morning of the church wedding, we were running late - hairdresser arrived later than expected. And I also found out that if you come late for your wedding, you are expected to pay a fine. And the bride had to be in church a solid thirty minute before the wedding started. So my friend was in quite a hurry, as I trailed her down to the car, still attaching adornments.
After ensuring I was dressed, I decided to give myself a few seconds shut-eye before proceeding down to the church.
Now down to the unfortunate part. The nap turned into a full blown sleep until I was awoken by the slamming of a door that had me bolting from the bed. And found myself staring into the scowling face of my friend. She’d been worried I’d lost my way or been involved in an accident.
The wedding was long over, while I snoozed on the bed ignorant of the persistent ringing of my mobile.
It was a miracle she forgave me. But I guess that is what friendship is all about. Overlooking the shortcoming, for the greater good. To some, it might not seem as an overwhelming sin but still, its quirky.
Readers what do you think? What is your own definition of friendship? And what is the most unforgivable sin you think you might not be able to forgive from a friend?
FYI - forgive so you will be forgiven!!! 70 x 7 !!!!!
